A Note on the Behavior of the Saprophytic Cocci with Regard to Gram's Stain
نویسنده
چکیده
C.-E. A., and A. R. Winslow I found that one of the fundamental differences between the parasitic and saprophytic cocci was their behavior to the Gram stain. The parasitic forms (Paracoccace~e) generally retained the stain, while the saprophytic group (Metacoccace~e) generally decolorized by Gram. In my recent revision of the Coccacem in the collection at the Museum of Natural History, 2 I was able to corroborate the observations made by these authors. Of twenty-three strains belonging to the subfamily Metacoccace~e, seventeen, or 74 per cent., were Gram-negative; two, or 9 per cent., were Gram-positive; and four, or 17 per cent., gave a variable reaction, giving both positive and negative tests either on the same slide or on different occasions. Three quarters of our strains thus appeared as Gram-negative, while only one twelfth of the cultures gave a repeatedly positive test. Winslow, using about 25o strains, obtained only 22 per cent. of Gram-positive reactions in this group. While studying the parallelism between the Gram reaction and inhibition of growth by gentian violet, Churchman a tested a large number of our organisms, among which were most of our M.etacoccace~e. His findings proved entirely contradictory to mine, as all the cocci tested by him are without exception reported as Grampositive. Believing that the discrepancies were due to the differences in the

Significance of Gram's Stain in Rapid Intrapartum Screening for Maternal Carriership of Group B Streptococcus
OBJECTIVE Group B streptococcus (GBS, Streptococcus agalactiae) is an important cause of neonatal sepsis. Prevention is possible by intrapartum screening for maternal GBS carriership and antimicrobial treatment of colonized women with risk factors during labor. The conflicting results of diagnostic performance are reported both for the newly developed rapid GBS antigen tests and Gram's stain. ...
متن کاملGram's Stain Revisited
Little did Christian Gram1 know that his differential staining technique developed in 1884 would remain one of the first procedures learned by beginning bacteriology students and one of the first procedures carried out in any laboratory where bacteria are routinely identified at the end of the 20th century. In today's high-tech medical world where the utilization of nucleic-acid amplification i...
متن کاملCan the Gram's stain be used as a diagnostic tool?
The Gram's stain technique was never intended for use as a diagnostic tool. This technique does not possess the characteristics necessary to yield such specific results. However, there is.no doubt that the Gram's stain is a useful technique to distinguish the morphology of bacteria. It is also of significant use, to a degree, in distinguishing two major groups of bacteria, the gram-positive and...
متن کاملSputum gram's stain in community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia. A meta-analysis.
The usefulness of the sputum Gram's stain is controversial. This meta-analysis was designed to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the sputum Gram's stain in community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia. Using a predetermined protocol, articles were discovered through a MEDLINE search (1966 to 1993) and the examination of bibliographies and were graded for quality by three blinded reviewer...
متن کاملFirst notification of positive blood cultures and the high accuracy of the gram stain report.
When blood cultures turn positive, the attending physicians are usually notified immediately about Gram stain findings. However, information on the accuracy of Gram staining is very limited. We examined the accuracy of preliminary blood culture reports provided by a regional laboratory in an observational study including the years 1996, 2000 to 2001, and 2003. We used data from computer files a...
